RISK MANAGEMENT TECHNICIAN

Pay Grade: 54    Pay Range: $16.59 to $23.23 per hour plus benefits

FSLA Status:  Non-exempt (Eligible for overtime)

 

Qualifications: Experience equivalent to two (2) years in the area of risk management or a related field with focus on workers' compensation or related experience. Candidate must also possess a valid Arizona Operator's Drivers License. 

 

Responsibilities:  Under general direction and supervision, submits, coordinates and administers workers compensation claims; provides technical claim support for the Risk Management Division; responsibility to timely submit and monitor workers compensation claims submitted to the Arizona Municipal Risk Retention Pool ("AMRRP"); coordination and compliance with Industrial Commission and AMRRP regarding claims; assist employees with the workers' compensation claims process; coordination with AMRRP for employee and departmental safety training; and related risk management duties. Provides clerical and technical support on a wide array of issues relating to risk management, insurance and safety; performs duties necessary to assist in preparation of quarterly departmental incident reports; responsibility for filing correspondence and claim documents in keeping risk management files up to date; communication and cooperation with other divisions, outside agencies, and the general public is also expected.  Responds to and investigates risk management situations regarding claims as needed; serves as point of contact with AMRRP representatives for and workers' compensation claims; maintains risk management loss runs for the City's and workers' compensation claims.  Gathers, reviews, compiles, analyzes data and information for certificate of insurance compliance with City departments. Works with and assists employees regarding workers' compensation claims; provides medical care provider information to employees and monitors workers' compensation claims; provides employee with wage information related to workers' compensation claims and other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of Workers' Compensation and OSHA/ADOSH laws, rules, regulations, policies and compliance procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state and city rules and regulations.
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining accurate records, reports, and files.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions and implement recommendations in support of goals.
  • Fulfill expectation to gain knowledge of the City's governmental organization, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department heads, employees and their representatives, citizens, business and professional groups and the general public.
  • Ability to gather statistical information regarding claims including, but not limited to, the number of claims and amount paid for such claims for worker' compensation.
  • Ability to read and comprehend insurance related technical materials i.e. policies, journals, etc.
  • Ability to perform general math calculations, calculating percentages, ratios and basic math skills.
  • Ability to prepare concise reports, correspondence to departments or other entities regarding claims.
  • Skill in utilizing office equipment and computer software including databases and spreadsheets to research, maintain, and update records and files.
  • Must have organizational skills and ability to regulate and complete tasks on schedule; ability to prioritize all tasks; performance is reviewed periodically.
  • Must maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Work requires analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties; requires independent thinking regarding claims, safety and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate and complete a variety of risk management tasks; maintaining and confidentiality regarding employee medical records and other sensitive information.

 

Physical Abilities: Sufficient to effectively and safely perform required duties and to safely operate required equipment and City vehicles as needed. Hearing and speaking ability sufficient to clearly, concisely and effectively communicate in person, over the radio and the telephone.
