Community Outreach Coordinator
Police Department  - 20 Hours per week

Pay Range: $16.19 to $22.66 plus benefits
(Part-time employees are not eligible for health insurance.)
New employees usually start at beginning level of pay range
FLSA status:  Non-exempt (eligible for over time)


Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Qualified applicants must have advanced knowledge of multiple common social media platforms; including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Must possess a current AZ driver's license; in good standing.  Candidate must successfully pass background investigation, polygraph test, drug testing, verbal response interview, driving and credit check.


Tasks: Under the direction and supervision of the training and recruiting officer, coordinate and facilitate community outreach programs such as Coffee with a Cop, Citizen Academy and Teen Academy. Manage social media interactions and assist with public information campaigns. Assist with pre-employment background investigations as needed. Other tasks and responsibilities as required by position. Prepares and presents a variety of public awareness and education programs in crime prevention to the community; crafts and delivers public service announcements for the local media to alert the community regarding crime in the area; informs the public regarding crime prevention techniques through speaking engagements, neighborhood programs, special events and media releases.  Coordinates volunteer programs, National Night Out celebration, Block Watch, Watch Your Car and Crime Free Multi-Housing Programs. 


Knowledge, Skills and other Characteristics:

Applicant must have knowledge of:

  • Department policy and regulations and applicable federal, state and local laws and ordinances.
  • Principals, practices and techniques of various crime prevention methods and models.
  • Public outreach and educational program development methods.
  • Public speaking techniques.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with police and public.
  • Theories and principals of public relations, public information and basic communication techniques.

Applicant must have skill in:

  • Utilizing public relations techniques in responding to inquiries and complaints.
  • Reaching a substantial public audience to increase positive community relations and awareness about crime prevention campaigns and methods.
  • Preparing effective literature on programs, campaigns or outreach efforts, including crime prevention.
  • Conducting statistical analysis and research in crime prevention.
  • Intermediate level computer skills and record keeping.
  • Developing and implementing new programs as well as analyzing program effectiveness.
  • Responding to inquiries and complaints from citizens, employees and media.


Physical and Visual Ability: sufficient to effectively and safely perform required duties, lift 25 35 pounds, and to safely operate required equipment and City vehicle as needed.

Hearing and Speaking Ability: sufficient to clearly, concisely and effectively communicate in person and over the telephone.
